In our program we have included the findings of the “National Reading Panel” according to which there are five proven learning elements that utilize strategies for success in the area of Reading: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics including explicit instruction in sounding out words, Vocabulary Development, Active comprehension strategies and Reading fluency including oral reading skills. Reading instruction utilizes the Balanced Literacy Framework (Gay Su Pinnell, 2006). Instruction also includes guided, independent and shared reading and writing activities.
In Mathematics, the program includes the elements as recommended by the “National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (2000-2004)” along with the principles and techniques emphasized in the “Math Wings and Success for All (SFA)” curricula. Our curriculum addresses the 5 content standards as well as the 5 process standards: Number and Operations, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement, Data Analysis and Probability, Problem Solving, Reasoning and Proof, Communication, Connections, Representation. The goals outlined and specific expectations of each grade level are carefully studied and included in our supplementary curriculum. Our tutors are familiarized with this study and its findings during the curriculum training provided to them after being recruited by us.
